Everyone wants their puppy to be well-mannered, well-behaved and happy. Having a dog with training or behaviour issues is stressful for everyone..... and with up to 85% of dogs reported to have problematic behaviour, that's a worry for anyone with a new puppy!  Most people make the huge mistake of waiting until they start to have issues before seeking help, rather than taking a proactive approach.

The knowledge and experience I’ve gained from training hundreds of dogs and puppies (as well as working on veterinary referral to tackle canine behaviour problems, such as aggression, anxiety and excessive barking) has put me in a great position to know how best to prevent problems and set puppies and their owners up for a wonderful life together.

‘Amazing! After each of the puppy sessions, we felt more confident.

The fact that the whole family was involved was great. It's been a great start for a happy, confident and well-behaved dog.

‘Gretta is absolutely brilliant.

She pulls on her experience and knowledge to bring a range of ideas and is very practical, but also often gives you further reading recommendations or video clips to enable you to build your own knowledge, on top of the plans you have created together. Most importantly, Gretta is such a lovely person and makes the whole process enjoyable!’

 FAQs

+ Is this puppy training?

Well Brought Up Pup certainly includes puppy training but in a very targeted and personalised way in which we focus on the skills most relevant for you and your puppy, taught in a way that best suits you both. After all, training is only useful if it actually helps you and your puppy live a better life together. So, yes, you’ll learn how to teach your puppy how to respond to training cues but, more importantly, you’ll be teaching them skills to become a well-mannered member of the family. In addition, we work on preventing problems developing in your puppy (again, tailored to the individual) and help you build a great relationship with your dog so that you can enjoy a wonderful life together. Have a look at ‘What’s Included’ (above) and the testimonials - oh, and the case studies which can be found in my services guide - and you’ll see that this is so much more than simply ‘puppy training’!

+ What about socialisation? Don’t I need to go to group classes?

This is a great question… and it’s brilliant that you’re aware of the need to provide socialisation opportunities for your puppy! Most people think of puppy socialisation as being the chance to play with other pups and so opt for group classes for this reason. Sadly, many classes simply do not manage this very well: both research and experience tells us that this can cause more harm than good. So, to answer your question, yes - you absolutely do need to socialise your puppy but no – you don’t need to go to group classes for this. Instead, you’ll be given guidance (tailored to your individual puppy and situation), to support you in socialising your puppy brilliantly, within your normal life together. It certainly won’t include allowing your puppy to be overwhelmed or practise inappropriate behaviour in a free-for-all with a group of other pups!

+ Can you absolutely guarantee that my dog won't develop behavioural problems?

It's not possible to make guarantees about future behaviour (remember: puppies are not 'clean slates' and your own behaviour will also influence your puppy!). However, research has shown that good advice from a qualified behaviourist early on has a positive impact in reducing the incidence of behavioural issues in dogs and this is backed up by my own experience. Well Brought Up Pup takes a proactive approach to harness your puppy's potential and deliberately target your input to avert the development of the most likely preventable behaviour issues, relevant to your individual puppy.

+ Do different breeds/ individuals need to be taught the same skills in a totally different way?

Not exactly.... the same basic principles of learning theory apply to all animals. However, when you're dealing with a species as diverse as the domestic dog, a one-size-fits-all approach is never going to be the best way. Individual dogs have unique personalities and, just like humans, learn best when things are taught in a way that takes this into account. In addition, having a curriculum tailored to your individual puppy allows you to really focus your efforts where they matter most. It's all about personalising the learning to achieve the best outcomes for you and your puppy.

+ What methods do you use?

All of the training/ behaviour strategies that I recommend for your puppy will be kind, ethical and effective, based on positive reinforcement. Your puppy’s emotional wellbeing is of paramount importance and will be a key consideration at every stage. There is absolutely no place for fear and intimidation here!

+ Will the sessions take place in-person?

Yes! Well Brought Up Pup can be delivered in person in York, Harrogate and surrounding areas of North Yorkshire. You just need to get in touch to arrange this (travel charges may apply to some locations).
